HOBART, Ind. — Two people suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash on I-65 northbound at the 157.5 mile marker between 61st Avenue and Ridge Road, Indiana State Police said.

A little after 2:30 a.m. Monday, 911 dispatchers received calls about a wrong-way driver crash at the location. Callers said a white vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes hit a black northbound vehicle nearly head-on.

State troopers found both drivers unconscious and trapped inside their vehicles. They rendered first aid until medical personnel arrived to take over care.

Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles and were taken to the University of Chicago with life-threatening injuries, according to state police.

A preliminary investigation found a white 2016 Hyundai SUV was traveling southbound in the inside northbound lane when it hit a black Nissan SUV traveling northbound. The Hyundai came to rest on the inside shoulder. The Nissan came to rest on the outside shoulder.

Investigators closed the roadway for about three hours while evidence was collected. Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be contributing factors. Once the investigation is complete, police will hand their findings over to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential charges.
